Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay lived with her Aunt Denise, who encouraged DuVernay to be creative and instilled by the arts. The aunt she had was a nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her day to art literature as well as theater, among other things. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and taught how to express herself by using the arts. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay would make use of the summers that she spent in the state to stimulate her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at in the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to produce in broadcast journalism when she was in the college. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of members of the juries. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism, and she decided to switch careers into the publicity industry. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in the small studio that she worked in following her college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range of networks for promotion and lifestyle, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
